Our Last Name
Your last name isn’t Bryant?
One of our favorite pastimes is to have long conversations about literally any topic. A few years into our relationship, one of those topics was last names.
Why does the wife take the husband’s last name? What if he takes her last name instead? Why not mash both names together and make a new name? Why not pick something super cool?
Hailey had always planned on changing her name when she got married, but Sebastian hadn’t considered it before. We liked the idea of mashing our last names together, but we thought Harshant and Bryman were pretty terrible. Instead we started the search for something else.
Did you consider any other names?
Hailey compiled a list of potential last names we suggested to each other, and a few from friends and family, which we narrowed down over time.
Jasper, Flint, Briarwood, Sparrow, Pond, Wilde, Gray, Graves, and other similar names.
Hailey wanted something that wouldn’t have an immediate word association with anything. Sebastian is a lapidary artist, and at one point he looked up what the traditional last name is for someone who carves stone (Kardashian) - which was immediately rejected.
Eventually, we had narrowed our list down to three names; Graves, Briarwood, and Stone.
Why did you pick Stone?
Hailey wasn’t sure if we were cool enough for the name Graves, and Sebastian liked the “cool wizard who lives in the forest” vibe of Briarwood, but Hailey thought that it was a little too extra. They also didn’t feel quite right to us. Ultimately, we settled on Stone because it seemed to suit us.
