Our Last Name
One of our favorite pastimes is to have long conversations about literally any topic. A few years into our relationship, one of those topics was last names.
Why does the woman take the man’s last name? What if he takes her last name instead? Why not mash both names together? Why not pick something super cool and new?
Hailey had always planned on changing her name when she got married, but Sebastian hadn’t considered it before. We liked the idea of mashing our last names together, but Harshant and Bryman are pretty terrible, so instead we started the search for something else.
Hailey compiled a list of potential last names we suggested to each other, and a few from friends and family, which we narrowed down over time.
Hailey wanted something that wouldn’t have any immediate association with a celebrity or business (Sanderson is a cute last name, but people would always quote Hocus Pocus at us). Sebastian is a lapidary artist, and at one looked up what the traditional last name for someone who carves stone - which was immediately rejected as an option.
Eventually, we had narrowed our list down to three names; Graves, Briarwood, and Stone.
Hailey wasn’t sure if we were cool enough for the name Graves, and Sebastian liked the “cool wizard who lives in the forest” vibe of Briarwood, but they didn’t feel quite right to us. Ultimately, we settled on Stone because it seemed to suit us, and we thought that it felt right.
